California Calling

Slowly but surely we are able to explore beyond the comfort of our homes. We will share with you the great destinations that may be a drive away or a short flight and some of the great flavors of that destination. The USA is a great place for travel.

Each state has its own beauty, California offers mountains and the sea, history, castles and cities. 2.7 million pounds, 2100 years old, 275 feet tall, it’s not science fiction but fact, it’s the General Sherman tree in Sequoia National Park.

California is known for its beautiful beaches and celebrities but a visit can include those and so much more.

Its national parks have giants with cinnamon barks that reach the sky, lumbering black bears, frogs, even spotted owls. Consider staying at the Wuksachi Lodge and dining at The Peaks, a culinary travel experience in the western USA.

Need more magnificent scenery? Yosemite National Park’s waterfalls, rock formations and valleys are a nature lover’s paradise. Discover the peaceful Hetchy Hetchy Park, even enjoy local wine and olive oil, an unexpected part of your culinary experience.

If you are a photography buff, a visit to the museum and the Ansel Adams gallery is a must.  Head west from Yosemite and spend a day or two in iconic San Francisco. The city by the bay is full of life, history, nature and good food. Take a tour of Alcatraz, besides its infamous inmates like Al Capone or Robert Stroud (Birdman of Alcatraz), the island and structure have a history connected to the military and the Indians of All Tribes.

A morning walk, stop in to Boudin’s for original sourdough bread, continue on the wharf where can get you up close and personal with the seals, happy to share their thoughts and then spend the afternoon on trolley, taking in the sights of this lovely hilly city.

San Francisco has a plethora of restaurants. We had the opportunity to indulge at The Progress, one of the most unique and tasty meals I’ve ever had in my culinary travels.

Follow the coastline to Santa Barbara, a fascinating city that effortlessly swirls history, art, culture and mouthwatering dishes to please anyone. One of the ‘hidden secrets’ of Santa Barbara is the courthouse, not grey walls or cold metal doors, but a flourish of art that educates and delights all at the same time. Of course the Old Mission gives you great insight to the past and a treat for the senses.

Lights, camera, action, Hollywood’s fame is as big as the stars that work and live there. Take a stroll down the Walk of Fame, do a selfie in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre or take a Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour of Los Angeles for a great overview. Discover the boutique hotel that has served iconic figures of the past and present, The Roosevelt Hotel.

Fun Fact: The artichoke is the California State Vegetable.
